New professional bondsmen and recovery agents must complete a 12-hour instructional course and pass an examination administered by the Alabama Department of Insurance within 90 days of commencing business.

Professional bondsmen and recovery agents must complete 8 hours of continuing education annually and submit proof of completion to relevant court officials by December 1 each year.

The Alabama Department of Insurance provides annual certification; the Alabama Bail Agents Association may conduct continuing education but cannot be involved in the certification process or issuance of certifications.

Individuals who fail to comply with certification and continuing education requirements are suspended from acting as a professional bondsman or recovery agent until compliance is demonstrated.

Initial 12-hour course and annual 8-hour continuing education cannot exceed $500 each; Department of Insurance may charge up to $125 for application, testing, and initial certificate.
