SB417 Summary

• Expands the definition of "infected health care workers" to include those infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), in addition to the existing categories of HIV and hepatitis B virus (HBV).

• Requires health care workers infected with HCV who perform invasive procedures to notify the State Health Officer in a time and manner prescribed by the State Board of Health.

• Authorizes the State Board of Health to designate by rule additional diseases beyond HIV, HBV, and HCV that infected health care workers must report to the State Health Officer.

• Establishes an expert review panel process for infected health care workers performing invasive procedures to assess practice restrictions needed to protect patients and the public.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
