SJR20 Summary

• Creates the Alabama Prison Reform Task Force to study causes and identify legislative solutions for prison overcrowding and corrections personnel understaffing.

• Task force comprises 16 categories of members including legislators, judges, district attorneys, crime victims' representatives, law enforcement, and executive branch officials, with membership reflecting racial, gender, geographic, urban, rural, and economic diversity.

• Task force shall examine court procedures and sentencing, crime data, felony and parole policies, prison admissions and length of stay, community work center programs, recidivism rates, and alternative drug court sentencing.

• Task force must report findings, conclusions, and legislative recommendations to the Legislature no later than the 15th day of the 2015 Regular Session, then dissolve.

• Legislative members receive regular compensation, per diem, and travel expenses; nonlegislative members may be reimbursed for meeting-related expenses.
