SJR53 Summary

• Creates a Joint Legislative Orientation Committee composed of the Speaker of the House, President Pro Tempore of the Senate, President of the Alabama Law Institute (as chair), Secretary of the Senate, and Clerk of the House of Representatives.

• Requires a Legislative Orientation to be held in Montgomery between the November 2014 general election and the second Tuesday in January 2015.

• Provides training on the legislative process, bill drafting, parliamentary procedure, state economic status, budgeting, Alabama Constitution, Code of Alabama, and significant issues identified by the committee.

• Committee responsibilities include setting the orientation date, planning the agenda and selecting speakers, and developing and overseeing the budget.

• Legislative committee members receive regular compensation, per diem, and travel expenses through the 2014 election, then compensation pursuant to Amendment 871 of the Alabama Constitution beginning with terms after the 2014 election.
