HB143 Summary

• Amends Section 6-5-338 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to extend tort liability immunity to firefighter paramedics and firefighter emergency medical technicians licensed by Alabama and employed by the state, county, or municipality.

• Immunity applies only when these medical personnel operate on-duty in direct support of tactical law enforcement units to provide medical services, contingency planning, and operational weapon support.

• Defines "tactical medic" as a licensed firefighter paramedic or emergency medical technician providing medical services in support of tactical law enforcement operations.

• Limits immunity to on-duty tactical medics and peace officers employed by governmental units; excludes private non-governmental employers and off-duty personnel from immunity protection.

• Requires private employers of off-duty peace officers or tactical medics to maintain at least $100,000 in liability insurance; failure to maintain coverage makes employers individually liable for all actions taken by off-duty personnel within the scope of private employment.

• Effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
