HB22 Summary

• Creates distinctive motor vehicle license plates for paid professional firefighters, designed by the state association of professional firefighters in coordination with the Alabama Department of Revenue.

• Establishes that professional firefighters can obtain the distinctive plates by application and proof of membership, paying regular license fees, for use on personally owned private passenger vehicles registered in their names.

• Designates falsely obtaining or certifying someone to obtain a professional firefighter license plate as a Class C misdemeanor punishable under existing law.

• Amends Sections 32-6-250 and 32-6-251 to provide that members of the Legion of Valor receive a free distinctive permanent license plate (designated "LOV") for a private motor vehicle registered in their name, with no fee or tax required.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor, with distinctive plates to be prepared and furnished beginning with the licensing year commencing January 1, 2016.
