HB29 Summary

• Active and contributing members of the Employees' Retirement System of Alabama may purchase up to two years of service credit for time spent receiving workers' compensation benefits for work-related injuries.

• Members must have returned to work with their covered employer within one year after workers' compensation benefits ended to be eligible for this service credit purchase.

• Members cannot receive credit for any period already credited in the system or in other retirement plans, except for federal Social Security program service.

• Eligible members must pay the full actuarially required cost for each year of service credit purchased to the system Secretary-Treasurer within two years from the end of the disability period.

• The Board of Control of the Employees' Retirement System shall adopt rules and regulations for administration, including verification of the service credit being purchased.
