HB299 Summary

• Amends Section 16-51-3, Code of Alabama 1975, to change the Board of Trustees term length for the University of North Alabama from 12 years to 6 years.

• Establishes a transition schedule beginning in 2015 where the board is divided into three groups with staggered appointments: three members appointed for 2-year terms, three for 4-year terms, and three for 6-year terms.

• Provides that all successor board members appointed after the transition period shall serve six-year terms, with eligibility for reappointment to additional terms.

• Maintains existing board composition of nine members: six from the seventh and eighth congressional districts (with at least two from the institution's home county), three from the state at large, plus the State Superintendent of Education and Governor as ex officio members.

• Takes effect immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
