HB 50 Summary

• Amends Section 22-11A-21 of the Alabama Code to increase the criminal penalty for knowingly transmitting, assuming the risk of transmitting, or committing an act that will probably or likely transmit a sexually transmitted disease from a Class C misdemeanor to a Class C felony.

• Leaves unchanged existing Class C misdemeanor penalties for unlicensed treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and for selling drugs or medicines advertised as cures without a physician's prescription.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval, or upon otherwise becoming law.

• Bill qualifies for an exemption from Amendment 621 constitutional requirements regarding local expenditures because it defines a new crime or amends the definition of an existing crime.
