AL HB615

Establishes the right to be free from discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or familial status as a civil right in Alabama.

Applies to employment, public accommodations, housing, credit transactions, and political participation for individuals employed by employers with nine or more employees in the state.

Allows civil actions for discrimination violations with remedies including injunctions, compensatory damages, punitive damages, back pay with interest, and attorney fees at court discretion.

Limits back pay liability to two years before filing an action and exempts religious organizations from employment provisions when hiring individuals of a particular religion for religiously-connected work.

Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and Governor approval.
