HB648 Summary

• Establishes May 31 or the first business day thereafter as the uniform date when boards of education must notify nontenured teachers that their contracts will not be renewed for the next school year.

• Prohibits boards of education from posting vacancies for teaching positions for the next school year until five days after May 31 or the first business day thereafter.

• Exempts teaching positions from the posting delay requirement when a vacancy occurs during the school year and the position is being filled while school is in session.

• Requires vacancy notices to be posted in conspicuous locations at least 14 calendar days before filling, or 7 days if the vacancy occurs during the school year, with notices including job description, qualifications, salary, application instructions, and deadlines.

• Applies to school years commencing after the effective date of the act and supersedes conflicting dates in Sections 16-24C-4 and 16-24C-5.
