Commends Hershel Owens on being selected Pioneer of the Year by the Alabama House of Representatives.

Owens was born December 23, 1938, in Burnwell, Alabama, and overcame humble beginnings without electricity or indoor plumbing to become a successful businessman and religious leader.

Retired as Senior Vice President from the First National Bank of Tuscaloosa and has pastored Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church for 34 years and Emmanuel Baptist Church for 15 years.

Served on the Pickens County DHR Board since 2006 and as a Chamber of Commerce member; has four children, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

House of Representatives honors and commends Owens for his meritorious characteristics, commitment to excellence, and the respect he has earned throughout Alabama.
