Posthumously honors Dr. James Alexander Franklin, Sr., for outstanding lifetime achievement and service to humanity.

Dr. Franklin was born November 17, 1886, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, earned his undergraduate degree from Lincoln University, and graduated with honors from the University of Michigan Medical School.

Settled in Mobile, Alabama in 1919 and provided essential medical care to North Mobile, treating patients who could not afford care and accepting payment "in kind" from those unable to pay.

Hosted prominent African-Americans including Jackie Robinson, Marian Anderson, and Paul Robeson during segregation when they were denied hotel accommodations; his home is now a historical landmark.

The Franklin Primary Health Clinic, founded in 1975 and named in his honor, continues to provide quality health care with 15 locations in Mobile County and other south Alabama counties.
