SB153 Summary

• Licensed motor vehicle rental companies may authorize employees or authorized representatives to offer or sell insurance coverage without requiring those individuals to be personally licensed as insurance agents.

• Employees and representatives offering insurance must act under the rental company's supervision and the company must pay them compensation; they are exempt from the 40-hour prelicensing course, written examination, and continuing education requirements.

• Compensation for employees and representatives cannot be based primarily on the number of customers purchasing insurance but may be incidental to their overall compensation.

• Rental companies may only offer insurance in connection with vehicle rentals for periods not exceeding 90 consecutive days, including personal accident insurance, liability insurance, personal effects insurance, roadside assistance, and emergency sickness protection.

• The bill becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
