Beginning in the 2016-2017 school year, students must correctly answer at least 60 of 100 questions on a civics test identical to the U.S. citizenship and immigration services naturalization test to graduate from high school or obtain a high school equivalency diploma.

Schools must document on student transcripts that the civics test requirement has been successfully completed.

Local boards of education determine the administration method and students may retake the test multiple times until achieving a passing score.

Special education students are exempt from the passing score requirement unless learning at grade-level appropriate standards and the civics test is specifically required in their individualized education program.

The State Board of Education may make the test available to nonpublic high school students and charge a reasonable fee to cover administration costs.
