SB186 Summary

• Amends Section 36-6-6, Code of Alabama 1975 to require that salaries for cabinet members, assistant cabinet members, assistant department heads, and exempt service employees be fixed in accordance with State Personnel Board recommendations for appropriate pay ranges within the state pay plan.

• Removes previous fixed salary caps of $35,000 for department heads, $30,000 for assistant department heads, and $25,000 for other exempt service officers and employees.

• Requires that when an authority other than the Governor appoints such officers or employees, the salary must be fixed by the appointing authority with approval from both the Governor and State Personnel Board.

• Directs the Governor or appointing authority to consider salaries for comparable positions in other states and private industry in Alabama when setting compensation.

• Becomes effective October 1, 2015.
