SB213 Summary

• Amends Section 6-5-332.3 of the Alabama Code to encourage potential users of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to successfully complete training courses in AED use and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) offered or approved by nationally recognized organizations.

• Requires AED manufacturers to provide in-service training materials on AED use and operation to each entity that acquires an AED.

• Modifies the definition of AED to require devices be commercially distributed in accordance with the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act rather than requiring specific FDA pre-market notification approval.

• Requires persons or entities acquiring an AED to notify the local emergency communications center or dispatcher if any change of ownership of the AED occurs.

• Exempts individuals using an AED in emergency settings while acting as good samaritans from the requirements of this section.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
