SB22 Summary

• Amends Section 16-13-231 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to remove temporary academic school calendar parameters that were limited to the 2013-2014 school year.

• Allows each local board of education to provide 180 full instructional days based on an hourly equivalent of no less than 1080 instructional hours, with flexibility in calendar structure.

• School calendars must have the first day of instruction no earlier than the Monday two calendar weeks before Labor Day and the last day no later than the Friday immediately before Memorial Day.

• Permits local boards to adjust school calendar days or extend teaching hours on specified instructional days to meet the 180-day or 1080-hour requirement, including flexibility for extreme circumstances such as natural disasters or health-related closures.

• Prohibits local boards from reducing employee compensation or salary schedule amounts based on calendar modifications made under this act.
