SB234 Summary

• Increases Alabama Board of Nursing membership from 9 to 13 members effective January 1, 2016, comprising 5 licensed professional nurses, 3 advanced practice nurses, 4 licensed practical nurses, and 1 consumer member.

• Changes the appointment process for professional nurses and advanced practice nurses to require the Governor select from nominees provided by a multi-organization nominations committee rather than solely the Alabama State Nurses' Association.

• Expands the definition of nursing practice to authorize certified registered nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and physician's assistants to delegate orders to registered nurses and licensed practical nurses, in addition to physicians and dentists.

• Adds three advanced practice nurse positions (two certified registered nurse practitioners and one certified registered nurse anesthetist) to the board effective January 1, 2016.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
