SB305 Summary

• Authorizes the Jackson County sheriff to sell abandoned or stolen firearms to the highest bidder if the owner does not claim the firearm within six months of recovery.

• Requires bidders to be legally eligible to purchase firearms in Alabama and subjects all bidders to background checks; prohibits sale to legally ineligible bidders and requires refund of their bid amounts.

• Restricts firearm sales to gun dealers with active business licenses in Alabama for at least one year prior to the sale date, sold through sealed bid auction on a cash basis only.

• Directs proceeds from firearm sales, after deducting recovery, maintenance, and sale expenses, to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office for law enforcement purposes.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
