Replaces the minimum salary structure for Alabama probate judges with a new system based on a percentage of state district court judge salaries, varying by county population category (100% for Categories 1-2, 90% for 3-4, 80% for 5, and 70% for Category 6).

Provides step increases in salary for probate judges based on years of service in the same manner as district court judges receive increases for bench experience, up to the maximum salary allowed for district judges.

Removes the provision allowing probate judges to receive five cents per name for preparation of voter lists, eliminating this fee-based compensation structure.

Applies to judges elected or appointed after the effective date; judges currently serving on the effective date receive credit for prior years of service when calculating step increases.

Becomes effective on January 2019 when the next full term of probate judges takes office; does not affect judges compensated on a fee system or those receiving greater salaries under existing local law.
