SB37 Summary

• Establishes the "Corporal Matthew T. Bolar Act" to provide benefits to immediate family members of persons who died while on active duty in any U.S. military branch.

• Allows eligible family members to receive one "Alabama Gold Star Family" distinctive license tag at no additional cost (previously required a $3 fee).

• Exempts the vehicle bearing the distinctive tag from motor vehicle registration fees for one vehicle per family member.

• Defines "immediate family" to include spouses, parents, adoptive/step-parents, foster parents, siblings, children, grandparents, legal guardians, and others designated as next of kin by the Department of Defense.

• Requires applicants to present DD Form 2064 (Overseas Death Certificate) or DD Form 1300 (Report of Casualty), and a notarized affidavit from the Alabama Gold Star Family Organization if not listed as next of kin on those documents; becomes effective October 1, 2015.
