SB374 Summary

• Amends Act 2012-196 to authorize city mayors in Jefferson County to designate city officers or employees to issue motor vehicle registrations and license plates for city residents.

• Requires cities to collect the same issuance fees as county officials, which shall be retained by the city and credited to the city general fund.

• Allows city councils to levy an additional annual issuance fee not to exceed $5 per motor vehicle plate, with fees deposited into the city general fund for operation of the license plate issuing office.

• Establishes that cities must deduct and retain commissions on ad valorem tax assessments and collections at a rate of 1 percent for assessments and 1 percent for collections.

• Makes the provisions retroactive to April 1, 2014, and subjects cities to audit by the Examiners of Public Accounts with cities responsible for any shortages found.
