SB4 Summary

• Amends Section 32-5A-82 of the Alabama Code to define "safe distance" as not less than three feet when a vehicle overtakes and passes a bicycle.

• Safe distance requirement applies on roadways with marked bicycle lanes.

• Safe distance requirement applies on roadways without marked bicycle lanes if the speed limit is 45 miles per hour or less and there is no double yellow line indicating a no-passing zone.

• The three-foot safe distance rule only applies when the cyclist is riding within two feet of the right shoulder of the roadway.

• Effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
