SB435 Summary

• Applies only to Bibb County and establishes minimum qualifications for sheriff candidates, including U.S. citizenship, one year county residency, voter registration, high school diploma or GED, age 25 or older, three or more years of law enforcement experience, and no felony convictions.

• Requires the elected sheriff to complete a minimum of 12 hours of annual executive-level continuing education approved by the Alabama Sheriff's Association or National Sheriff's Association, with certification filed to the judge of probate by December 31.

• Provides an annual expense allowance of $8,480 payable biweekly from the county general fund, which may be treated as compensation for retirement purposes.

• Increases the sheriff's annual salary by $8,480 effective at the next term of office, at which point the expense allowance becomes null and void.

• Sheriff continues to receive uniform cost-of-living and other salary increases granted by the county commission to other elected officials.
