SB493 Summary

• Applies only to Class 1 and Class 2 municipalities in Alabama.

• Prohibits the Department of Revenue from issuing or renewing motor vehicle registration for owners who have failed to pay five or more parking tickets or citations.

• Requires municipalities to send written notice by first class mail to registered owners before notifying the Department of Revenue, with a minimum 30-day waiting period.

• For leased or rented vehicles, the owner must provide the renter's or lessee's name, address, driver's license number, and state of issuance to the municipality within 30 days of a parking violation notice.

• Imposes a $2 fee per violation on each subsequent renewal to cover enforcement costs; registration suspension remains in effect until the municipality notifies the Department that all tickets have been dismissed, paid, reversed on appeal, or cancelled.

• Effective January 1, 2016.
