SJR9 Summary

• Reestablishes and extends the Alabama Select Commission on High School Graduation and Student Dropouts, originally created by Act 2009-229.

• Commission shall consist of 20 members appointed by July 1, 2015: four House members (Speaker), four Senators (Lieutenant Governor), four business/civic leaders (Governor), four legal/philanthropic/education leaders (Chief Justice), and four education leaders (State Superintendent).

• Commission shall study high school dropout problems, graduation rates, educational and economic impacts, best practices, compulsory attendance age, and related policies across Alabama.

• Commission must submit final report including proposed legislation to state leadership on or before December 31, 2018, after which it shall be dissolved.

• Nonlegislative members serve without compensation but may be reimbursed for expenses; legislative members receive regular compensation, per diem, and travel expenses under Amendment 871.
