HB133 Summary

• Establishes uniform police jurisdiction of one and one-half miles from corporate limits for all municipalities, effective immediately upon passage.

• Allows municipalities to extend police jurisdiction up to three miles by local law if they maintain both a full-time police force and full-time paid fire department providing services throughout the extended area.

• Requires municipalities adopting ordinances after September 1, 2015, to provide 30-day notice before enforcing them in the police jurisdiction and submit notice to Atlas Alabama website if available at no cost.

• Permits existing ordinances, taxes, and regulations beyond one and one-half miles to remain in effect until July 1, 2017, but they are automatically repealed on that date unless the municipality enacts a local law authorizing extended jurisdiction.

• Allows municipalities with noncontiguous annexed property to elect not to exercise jurisdiction or levy taxes in portions of extended police jurisdiction.
