HB 240 Summary

• Amends Section 32-5B-4 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to expand seat belt requirements from front seat occupants only to all occupants of passenger cars manufactured with safety belts while the vehicle is in motion.

• Removes the word "front" from existing law to apply the safety belt requirement to all occupants rather than just front seat passengers.

• Maintains existing exemptions including child passengers covered under Section 32-5-222, persons with physician-documented medical inability to wear belts, rural postal carriers, newspaper/mail carriers, vehicles with model year prior to 1965, and vehicles that normally operate in reverse.

• Updates gender-neutral language by changing references from "his or her" to "or her" or "or she" throughout the statute.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor, or its otherwise becoming law.
