HB264 Summary

• Terminates use of Common Core Standards (also known as Alabama College- and Career-Ready Standards) in Alabama K-12 public schools effective with the 2017-2018 school year.

• Directs State Board of Education to use pre-Common Core curriculum standards for Math (as of May 2011) and English Language Arts (as of May 2012) as "Transition Standards" for the 2016-2017 school year.

• Requires State Board of Education to revise Transition Standards into new "Alabama Ahead Standards" based on pre-Common Core standards from top 10 percent performing states nationally, to be implemented starting 2017-2018.

• Creates Alabama Excellence Standards Commission comprised of internationally recognized curriculum experts to provide consulting services and submit a report on the Alabama Ahead Standards to legislative committee chairs at least 30 days before adoption.

• Prohibits State Board of Education from adopting any national standards or aligned assessments that cede control of Alabama's educational standards, including Next Generation Science Standards, History Standards, Social Studies Standards, or Sexuality Standards.
