HB27 Summary

• Amends Section 17-6-81 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to require Fair Ballot Commission ballot statements be posted on the Secretary of State's website instead of the legislative website.

• Ballot statements must be posted at least 60 calendar days before a statewide ballot measure vote and include the measure text, implementing legislation, ballot placement, and a plain language summary.

• Ballot statements must be written in clear, nontechnical language and include information about tax impacts, legal authority for passage, and effects if passed or defeated.

• Requires printed copies of ballot statements be made available 55 calendar days before the vote at the Secretary of State's office and judges of probate, with requesters able to be charged a printing fee.

• Becomes effective the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
