HB59 Summary

• Redesignates the licensure classification "graduate social worker" to "master social worker" and "certified social worker" to "independent clinical social worker" under the State Board of Social Work Examiners.

• Amends the definition of social work practice to explicitly include "assessment and diagnosis" as a recognized component of professional social work activity.

• Allows persons licensed as graduate or certified social workers prior to the effective date to continue using prior licensure titles for two years or until the board reissues their redesignated license.

• Updates terminology throughout Alabama Code Section 34-30 (social work licensing) to reflect the new licensure classifications, including requirements for independent clinical practice, professional associations, and penalties for misrepresentation.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
