Perry Oliver Hooper, Sr., a native of Montgomery, Alabama, died on April 24, 2016, at age 91 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Montgomery.

Hooper was elected Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court on November 8, 1994, and was the first Republican in Alabama history to be elected to that position.

Hooper served as the first elected Republican probate judge of Montgomery County (elected January 1965, reelected 1970) and as Circuit Judge of the 15th Judicial Circuit from 1974 until his retirement in 1983.

Hooper was active in the National Center for State Courts, Association of Chief Justices, and served as chair of multiple judicial committees and councils; he received the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law Mediation Award and the Howell Heflin Award.

Hooper is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn Yost Hooper; four children; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends.
