Perry Oliver Hooper, Sr., former Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, died on April 24, 2016, at age 91.

Hooper was the first Republican in Alabama history to be elected Chief Justice, winning election on November 8, 1994.

He served with the United States Marine Corps and held numerous judicial positions including probate judge of Montgomery County (1965-1970) and Circuit Judge of the 15th Judicial Circuit (1974-1983).

Hooper was active in professional organizations and received the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law Mediation Award and the Howell Heflin Award.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn Yost Hooper, four children, and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
