SB 11 Summary

• Establishes the Jason Flatt Act requiring all certificated public school personnel in Alabama to receive annual suicide awareness and prevention training.

• Training shall be provided through existing inservice training programs or required professional development offered by local school systems.

• Department of Education shall develop a list of approved training materials in consultation with suicide prevention experts, covering identification of mental health services and referral procedures.

• Each local school system must adopt a student suicide prevention policy addressing prevention, intervention, and postvention procedures, with the Department providing a model policy for reference.

• No cause of action or specific duty of care is created by implementation of this act or the training requirements, providing liability protection to schools and personnel.
