SB119 Summary

• Proposes a constitutional amendment to establish a unicameral legislature with 105 members elected from existing House of Representatives districts, effective the day after the 2018 General Election.

• Members must be at least 21 years old and meet current legislative qualifications; elections held at same time and manner as current legislature with same term lengths.

• Unicameral Legislature elects a Speaker and Speaker Pro Tempore at the beginning of each regular session, with the Speaker presiding and voting only in case of a tie; three-fifths vote required to override gubernatorial veto.

• Abolishes the office of Lieutenant Governor effective the day after the 2018 General Election and makes the State Treasurer first in line to succeed the Governor in case of removal, death, or resignation.

• Amendment becomes effective upon approval by majority of qualified electors voting thereon in accordance with Alabama Constitution Sections 284, 285, and 287.
