SB274 Summary

• Establishes the Educator-Student Interaction Training Act requiring the State Superintendent of Education, School Superintendents of Alabama, and Alabama Education Association to jointly develop training on appropriate educator-student interactions.

• Mandates at least one hour of annual training for public school educators beginning with the 2016-2017 academic year, delivered as part of required institutes under Alabama Code Section 16-23-7.

• Training must include instruction on state law, education policies, and best practices covering sexual/romantic contact, social media interaction, out-of-school interactions, corporal punishment, and physical restraint in classrooms.

• Provides liability protection by prohibiting causes of action for losses caused by implementation of the training and preventing the training from imposing specific duties of care or waiving existing legal immunities.

• Exempts the training requirement from waiver under the Alabama Accountability Act.
