• Benjamin E. Baker, principal of Ariton School in the Dale County School System, was named the 2016-2017 High School Principal of the Year for Alabama by the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals.

• Baker earned a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education and a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Troy University and has served as an educator for 19 years, with 12 years as an administrator.

• As principal, Baker initiated a weekend food program that provides more than 70 free or reduced-price lunch students with meals and established an "enrichment block" for students and teachers that created award-winning choir and school newspaper programs and a nursery/greenhouse business.

• The Principal of the Year Program, established in 1993, honors outstanding secondary and middle level principals who ensure students acquire a sound foundation for lifelong learning and demonstrate exemplary contributions to the profession.
