SJR18 Summary

• Creates the Emergency Task Force on School Safety and Security in response to school shootings and violence threats at Alabama public schools, colleges, and universities.

• Task force membership consists of 21 positions including educators, law enforcement officials, emergency management personnel, mental health and technology representatives, and legislative committee chairs, appointed by various state agencies and professional associations.

• Task force duties include conducting comprehensive review of state laws and regulations concerning school safety, identifying gaps in security protocols, and submitting recommendations for legislative action to the Speaker and President Pro Tempore.

• Task force must hold first meeting by August 1, 2016, with appointments made within 30 days of the act's effective date; members serve without compensation but may be reimbursed for necessary expenses.

• Task force shall submit findings and recommendations by December 31, 2016, at which time it dissolves.
