SJR78 Summary

• Creates the Alabama Task Force on At-Risk Children to study issues affecting children engaged in truant, delinquent, and at-risk behavior within juvenile and criminal justice systems.

• Task force comprises 18 members including representatives from Department of Youth Services, Department of Human Resources, Department of Mental Health, family court judges, mental health professionals, probation officers, attorneys, legislators, sheriffs, school superintendents, and the Governor's office.

• Task force shall collaborate with Alabama universities and colleges to study rehabilitative services, education, aftercare procedures, mental health services, and strategies to reduce children's involvement in justice systems.

• Task force must report findings, conclusions, and recommendations for proposed legislation to the Legislature no later than April 15, 2017.

• Legislative members receive regular compensation, per diem, and travel expenses; nonlegislative members may be reimbursed for meeting-related expenses according to their appointing authority's policies.
