Alabama has 11,000 miles of state, U.S., and interstate highways, and more than 5,700 bridges subject to naming resolutions.

As of January 2016, more than 620 separate naming resolutions were on record with the Alabama Department of Transportation.

All resolutions naming state, U.S., and interstate highways and bridges shall be assigned to the Joint Transportation Committee for coordination with the Department of Transportation.

The Joint Transportation Committee must provide initial approval of naming resolutions before final vote by the respective legislative chamber.

The committee process ensures naming resolutions comply with federal and state guidelines while preventing over-proliferation of highway signage and overlapping named segments.
