Department of Transportation may pay uncontested claims up to $5,000 per claim without State Board of Adjustment approval when the department determines the claim should be paid in justice and good morals.

Claims may cover injury to a person or property, or unpaid vendor invoices.

Claims must be approved by the Director of Transportation or designee before payment, and the Comptroller must issue payment within 30 days of receipt.

Any contested claims are forwarded to the State Board of Adjustment, and submission of a claim to the department tolls the statute of limitations under Section 41-9-65.

The act becomes effective 180 days following passage and approval by the Governor.
