Alabama Department of Corrections is authorized to establish a pilot program offering bonuses to correctional officers to increase retention and promote hiring of U.S. Armed Forces veterans.

Bonuses are awarded for remaining employed with the department for consecutive terms of employment as established by the department, subject to available funds.

Correctional officers must have been employed for at least 12 consecutive months before receiving any bonus.

The pilot program automatically expires on December 31, 2019, unless extended by the legislature.

The program is subject to appropriations made for the department in the annual budget act and requires no separate appropriation by this bill.
