HB81 Summary

• Amends Section 32-9-20 of the Alabama Code to allow vehicles with EPA-certified natural gas engines or EPA-approved conversion equipment to operate at increased weights on Alabama highways.

• Permits vehicles operating primarily on compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas to carry an additional 2,000 pounds on federal interstate highways, in accordance with 23 U.S.C. Section 127(s).

• Requires vehicle operators to provide written proof or certification that the vehicle has an EPA-certified natural gas engine or approved conversion unit and that the vehicle operates on such fuel.

• Applies the weight increase to both state highway levels and federal interstate highway levels for vehicles using qualifying natural gas engines or conversion equipment.

• Takes effect on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
