HJR 80 Summary

• Creates a Joint Legislative Task Force on Highway Safety composed of 10 members appointed by legislative leadership, law enforcement agencies, courts, education, business, and transportation departments.

• Task force membership must reflect the racial, gender, geographic, urban, rural, and economic diversity of Alabama.

• Directs the task force to review state highway safety laws and regulations, including impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, road rage, motorcycle traffic, and issues affecting young and elderly drivers.

• Requires the task force to identify safety gaps, recommend science-based countermeasures, and propose legislative actions to improve highway safety.

• Task force must submit written findings and recommendations to the Legislature no later than the fifth legislative day of the 2018 Regular Session, at which point it dissolves.
