Vera Dell Ragland Sailors was born February 26, 1911, in Bibb County, Alabama, to Margaret and Kelly Ragland.

Earned a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Alabama in 1958 and a Master's Degree in 1967 while teaching full-time; had a 25-year career as a teacher and principal in the Bibb County School System before retiring in 1975.

Listed in "Who's Who of American Women" and "Personalities of the South"; maintained vegetable gardens until age 90 and continues to preserve fruits and vegetables.
