SB 183 Summary

• Authorizes drivers involved in accidents with no apparent serious physical injury or death to immediately move their vehicle from the roadway to the shoulder, emergency lane, median, or nearby location if the vehicle is drivable and can be safely moved.

• Allows employees of the Alabama Department of Transportation and Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency to move, require to be moved, or assist in moving disabled vehicles from highways under their jurisdiction when the vehicle creates a traffic hazard or obstructs traffic.

• Prohibits movement of vehicles involved in accidents with injury or death of any person until directed by a law enforcement officer.

• Provides immunity from liability to the Department of Transportation and Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency for damages caused by moving vehicles pursuant to this section, with employees subject to Section 36-1-12.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor or upon otherwise becoming law.
