SB330 Summary

• Allows any sheriff in Alabama to issue or renew a pistol permit to a person residing in any county in the state, rather than restricting permits to residents of the issuing sheriff's county.

• Permits either the sheriff who initially issued the permit or the sheriff of the county where the permittee resides may revoke a permit for any reason that could lead to a denial.

• Requires a duplicate copy of any pistol permit issued to be sent by registered or certified mail within seven days to the Secretary of the Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency and the sheriff of the permittee's county of residence.

• Requires sheriffs to complete the National Instant Criminal Background Check within three days of receiving a completed application and fee before issuing or renewing a permit.

• Permits remain valid for one to five years as requested and are valid throughout the state, unless the applicant is prohibited by state or federal law or poses a reasonable public safety concern.
