SB359 Summary

• Amends Section 45-37-90.05 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to redefine the geographic boundaries within which the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Authority is authorized to construct, maintain, control, operate, and manage a civic center in Birmingham (the county seat).

• Replaces the previous boundary description with a detailed new boundary description that begins at the intersection of Thirteenth Avenue North and Twenty-sixth Street North (Carraway Boulevard) and traces specific streets and landmarks including Interstate 59/20, Eighth Avenue North (Reverend Abraham Woods Jr. Boulevard), Norfolk Southern Railway, and other named thoroughfares.

• Maintains the Authority's existing powers to construct and manage facilities for public meetings, athletic contests, concerts, exhibitions, and cultural events, and to acquire, lease, or convey property.

• Requires that any extension of the civic center area beyond the newly defined boundaries must be approved by resolution from both the Jefferson County governing body and the Birmingham city governing body.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
