Independent candidates in Alabama must normally file a petition signed by at least 3 percent of qualified electors who cast ballots for Governor in the last general election.

This bill reduces the petition signature requirement to 1 percent for special elections when the primary election date falls within 120 days after the Governor orders the special election.

The reduced requirement applies only to special elections with compressed timelines, not to regular general elections.

Petitions must be filed with the judge of probate for county offices or the Secretary of State for all other cases on or before 5:00 P.M. on the date of the first primary election.

The act becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
